🌱 Sound as rhizomatic rogue. Mobile lo-fi cinema for sale. Summer ends. | Summer sound letter #10
A plant or sound that you think you know and trust changes form under new conditions. The condition of the ground, the condition of the air, the condition of the mind.
Its flower evolves extraordinary new traits. Or traits that are crafty in their ordinariness. Meanwhile, the roots spread, expand, tangle, graft, choke, absorb, anchor, and freight, unseen and forgotten in the soil.
The sound designer must finally relinquish her work to the chaos of nature. How does the earth feel under her feet? Her fingers were once guests here. Now, worms dig passages too narrow and winding to be sensibly navigated.
And let’s not get started on the weeds between the paving stones. Lifting up the paving stones. Up walls and creeping between gardens. Attracting wild birds and insects.
Anyone in the market for a mobile Super 8 + 16 mm cinema? One Louis Hilgers is selling one from his base somewhere in the Netherlands. €10,000. Includes “neonletters C I N E M A M O B I L E” - no rude anagrams, please, young moguls!
I don’t know Mr Hilgers, but the combination of small-gauge projection, wood-panelling, and vintage seating make it more than relevant to our interests.
This brings our summer sound series to a close. Be sure to open next week’s post for a couple of big announcements. Including the topic we’ll cover over the autumn semester. Meanwhile, fold your beach towels neatly and vacuum your satchel; summer’s over, dear students. - GC (Principal)
